TBS Alamogordo’s urology team discusses prostate cancer, the second most common cancer in US men, but it can be successfully treated with early diagnosis and treatment. Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate grow uncontrollably. Symptoms include having to urinate more often or urgently, blood in urine or semen, pain in the back or pelvis, and erectile dysfunction (ED). Early diagnosis and treatment lead to better outcomes than delaying treatment until there are signs of advanced disease.
Introduction
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in US men, but it can be successfully treated. TBS Alamogordo has helped countless men with prostate cancer over the past two decades and they have never failed to help a man overcome prostate cancer.
What is Prostate Cancer?
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in US men. While skin cancer is the most common cancer in US men, prostate cancer is next. But it can be successfully treated. Prostate cancer usually grows slowly, but not always and it can spread to other parts of the body. It may cause no symptoms at all until it’s too late. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are important.
Who Gets Prostate Cancer?
Anyone can get prostate cancer, but it is most common among men. African American men are at the highest risk of getting prostate cancer. It is also more likely to affect men over age 50 and those with a family history of prostate cancer. Because prostate cancer usually doesn’t have symptoms, the only way to know if you have it is to get tested. Men should talk with their doctors about whether or not they should be screened for prostate cancer.
How is Prostate Cancer Diagnosed?
There are many possible symptoms of prostate cancer, including difficulty urinating, increased frequency of urination, blood in the urine or semen, pain during urination or ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction. However, not all men with prostate cancer will experience these symptoms. To diagnose prostate cancer early on, a doctor might recommend a digital rectal exam and/or a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test.
What are the Side Effects of Prostate Cancer Treatment?
One of the most common side effects of prostate cancer treatment is erectile dysfunction. This is caused by the removal or destruction of the nerves that control erections. Certain treatments for prostate cancer, such as hormone therapy and radiation, can also cause hot flashes and loss of sex drive. Some other possible side effects are urinary incontinence, fatigue, decreased bladder control, trouble getting an erection, and weight gain. A doctor will be able to help you manage these side effects through medication or surgery.
